I used an earlier edition in college many years ago. I purchased this edition prior to an extended trip to Michigan after many years' absence. I found the book even more engaging than when I used it as a textbook. George May's revisions include many more recent references, a more detailed treatment of Michigan's native people, and updates into the 1980's. It is highly readable, very detailed without being tedious, and includes numerous funny and touching stories and vignettes that are like little windows into the past. This is not your typical dry history textbook, but more like well-written nonfiction from the bestseller list. Michigander or not, if you have an interest in how Michigan came to be, from the last Ice Age to the present, this is the one book you should read. Super book. Tells all of the history in a balanced informed way and does it in a way that is not pedantic or boring.
