Ebook About A virtually undiscovered backpacking paradise, Idaho has numerous wilderness areas of mind-boggling size. Backpackers can find complete solitude, wildlife, and some of North America's most outstanding scenery. Idaho's mountains also boast great weather--fewer thunderstorms than the central Rockies, less rain than Oregon and Washington, and cooler summer temperatures than California.Backpacking Idaho takes you to what author Doug Lorain calls a "Shangri-la" for backpackers. In the craggy Selkirk Mountains you'll find lush forests, small cirque lakes, and jagged granite peaks. Watch for ospreys, river otters, and belted kingfishers in the swift Selway River. Explore hundreds of miles of trails in the gently rolling forested hills in north-central Idaho, or head to Hell's Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America, where you'll find both alpine tundra and cactus-studded desert.Book Backpacking Idaho: From Alpine Peaks to Desert Canyons Review :
Douglas Lorain's backpacking books are the cream of the crop, the high-water mark that other backpacking guides should strive toward. I own his Wyoming and Washington guides also, and all three are exceptional. These guides are for serious backpacking, and range from a long weekend, to nearly two-week adventures (about 20 miles to 70+). Every trip is rated on a scale of 1-10 on Scenery, Solitude, and Difficulty. Of course it is totally a subjective opinion of the routes, but it really comes in handy when your time is limited. And Mr. Lorain's opinion should definitely be highly regarded, as he's seen it all.Every trip also tells when the best time to visit is. I was surprised to read that the Lost River and Lemhi Ranges melted out faster than others, providing great backpacking by mid-June instead of July. Very helpful information.Every trip is highly detailed, and gives helpful information regarding stream crossings and peak flow times, mileage between each major checkpoint, well-researched and scouted "best campsites" and where to find them, and random tidbits on exceptional scenery and fishing spots to make the most of every trip. There are multitudes of side-trips described with each trip. This book was very helpful in planning over two weeks worth of backpacking in Idaho this summer. I couldn't have done it without this guide.I HIGHLY recommend this book, along with neighboring Backpacking Wyoming. Together, they give a fairly comprehensive overview of the best backpacking trips in the Rocky Mountains. Now only if Mr. Lorain wrote a Backpacking Montana!! Great backpacking guide! Concise collection of backpacking trips in a format difficult to find for free online. Shows where water and potential campsites are as well as tons of other useful information and tips for the specific area. Well done and highly recommended!!
