Ebook About Young, newly married and naive when Laurie and her husband reached their remote village in Saharan Niger, she encountered every challenge with optimism and grit. The memoir describes her sometimes harrowing Peace Corps service and the rewards of her health education work and women's friendships. And then chronicles her return after an absence of 30 years, a trip that further changed her life. Her encounters with the extreme heat, food shortages, Muslim patriarchy and two new languages--for a girl from suburban Mill Valley, California--leaves one breathless.Book Walking Each Other Home Again: A young Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger, 1960’s, and her return 30 years later Review :
Oman is a superb writer! Her succinct yet detailed vignettes will encourage you to experience the rhythms of Niger village life, the routines of childbirths and deaths, the complexities of foods and holidays, and the challenges of adapting to a different culture. Oman is honest with herself and her readers about loneliness and boredom and concerns about whether her Peace Corps work would have lasting value. After 30 years she returns to her village to renew relationships and discover what has changed and what hasn't. Oman's experiences open the door to broader questions about the Peace Corps experience: What were the strengths and weaknesses of the 1960s, 1970s Peace Corps? How did the initial focus on young, single volunteers (or recently married couples) work out? Overall, was three months of training adequate for thousands of volunteers—aside from the inspiring successes of many individual volunteers—to contribute effectively to development in their host countries? (And how many volunteers were trained in one language and then, as happened to Oman, placed in a site where a different language was spoken?!) More than 300 pages but they go by quickly, interesting and raising questions, and so it seems like fewer pages. This memoir will be a quick read as Oman's stories will engage you and pull you forward to the end. This heartwarming memoir is told in such vivid sensory detail that I felt I was there in Laurie Oman’s remote African village that became my home too as I read it. She was so young, so out of her depths, not knowing how she would fit into a community that had never had a Peace Corps volunteer, let alone a young couple of newlyweds with equally new skillsets, including barebones French in a community where most people only spoke Hausa. But they were quick learners and found their way to become a part of the community, be of benefit, and made lifelong friendships in the process. This photo-filled book isn’t just about the author’s two years in the Peace Corps, but about her invitation to return to the village thirty years later, so that as a reader I enjoyed finding out what had happened in the lives of her mostly women friends, and what changes had occurred in the village I had come to love right along with the author.
